The .dwt file defines the layout and structure of all pages on a web site (which use that template). Dreamweaver ensures that changes to the template are reflected to all the pages on a website which use that template.

Dreamweaver page template files can also be opened and used by Microsoft Expression Web.

3. Expression Web Dynamic Web Template file.

The .dwt file defines the layout and structure of all the pages on the site (which use that template). Microsoft Expression web ensures that any changes to the template are reflected to all the pages on the website which use that template.

To all intents and purposes, Dynamic Web Template files seem to be based on Dreamweaver page template files. This may be an effort by Microsoft to make it easier for users to migrate from Dreamweaver to Expression Web.
