- 1. Inno Setup script file.
An .iss file contains instructions for the Inno-Setup tool, which creates install packages for applications. The file is a text editable file, which can be edited using a text editor or within the free Inno-Setup utility. Inno Setup is a free installer for Windows programs.
The file format is similar to that of .ini files.

- 2. InstallShield Silent response file. A file that contains responses to
the dialogs which InstallShield would normally otherwise show during an
installation.
The responses contained in the .iss file are used in place of the normal install dialogs, this allows the installation to proceed silently, i.e. without any user intervention or any display of information to the user.
The file format is similar to that of .ini files.
