A .chk file is a checkpoint file used by the Extensible Storage Engine (ESE). The Extensible Storage Engine is a database format used by a number of Microsoft applications.

Checkpoint files might sometimes be given the file extension of .jcp instead of .chk. See .jcp for further information on ESE checkpoint files.
