ESRI ArcGIS map document file.

Each ArcGIS map document contains a page layout and one or more maps. Each map in turn can have multiple layers, tables, charts and reports associated with it.

The .mxd files are binary files in a proprietary format. They can only be opened and used using ESRI ArcGIS tools.
