1. Virtual Hard Disk (VHD) file.

Each VHD file contains the contents of an emulated physical disk.

2. Windows Server Backup file.

This is a dynamically expanding virtual hard disk. It is generated using the backup utility that ships with Windows Vista or Windows 2008 server. In a backup set there will be one .vhd file for each volume backed up.
