ASR (Automated System Recovery) is a feature provided with some versions of the Windows operating system, for recovering the operating system from a backup in the event of a disaster. ASR is intended as a last resort method of restoring a system with all other disaster recovery options have been exhausted.
An ASR backup will include information on the boot sector, system files and system environment. During an ASR backup the system settings are normally written to removable media.
Performing an ASR restore involves a reinstall of Windows, so it should be regarded as a final resort.
An advantage of an ASR restore is that it can allow for a restore to different hardware.
