Automatic Vehicle Locator, or Automatic Vehicle Location. Any system for real-time monitoring of the location of one or more vehicles. AVL typically uses a GPS device installed on each vehicle to obtain the vehicle location with a transmitter back to a central monitoring site from which the location of the vehicles can be monitored.
