2. Intelligence Preparation of the Operational Environment. Formerly known as Intelligence Preparation of the Battlespace (IPB) is a systematic, four-step, analytical methodology employed to reduce uncertainties concerning the adversary and to exploit or minimize the undesirable effects of the operational environment. IPOE is a continuous process which enables the commander and his staff to visualize the full spectrum of adversary capabilities, potential Centers of Gravity (COG), and possible Courses of Action (COA).
