.7z

7-zip compressed archive file.

7-Zip (also written as 7zip) is a free file compression and decompression tool. It supports many different compressed file formats. It uses the .7z file extension for its own compressed file format.

If desired, compressed files can be split across several .7z files which 7-zip calls "volumes". This is allows a large file to be compressed and written to a a number of CDs for example. When splitting a file across volumes the first file has the file extension .7z.001, the second .7z.002 and so on.
