7-Zip (also written as 7zip) is a free file compression and decompression tool. It supports many different compressed file formats. It uses the .7z file extension for its own compressed file format.

The .7z.001 file extension indicates that the file is the first part of set of files, which together form the 7-zip archive. All the parts (i.e. all the files) that together make the set are required to allow the contents to be decompressed. 7-zip allows compressed archives to be saved across a number of volumes (i.e. the .7z.001 file, .7z.002 file and so on), this is useful when an archive needs to be broken up into smaller files for transition for example by dvd or email.
